Gemini Spark is Google's personal agent inside the Gemini app. Google introduced it at I/O on May 19, 2026, as a 24/7 agent that manages tasks under your direction. It works with Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive, runs recurring jobs on a schedule or a trigger, and keeps going in Google's cloud after you close your laptop or lock your phone. In October 2026 Google moved it into the main chat as Task, next to Chat, and Spark settings became Task settings.

Facts come from Google's announcement and Gemini Help Center, plus press coverage, linked under Sources.

Short answer

  • Gemini Spark is a background agent for your Google apps and the web. You give it a goal, a schedule or a trigger, and it works on the task without you watching.
  • Common uses are inbox cleanup, digests from email, price alerts for flights and hotels, turning notes into Docs, and research packaged as PDFs, spreadsheets or slides.
  • It can use your local Chrome browser on desktop or a remote browser in the cloud. With the remote browser, work continues when your device is off.
  • It asks for confirmation before sending messages, changing your data, buying something or submitting a web form.
  • It is included in Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month) and AI Ultra ($99.99 or $199.99). It is not in Free or AI Plus, and not available in the EEA, Nigeria, Switzerland or the UK.

What Gemini Spark is

Google describes Spark as the step from an assistant that answers questions to one that does work on your behalf. It launched on Gemini 3.5 using the Antigravity agent harness, and coverage of the October rollout in India says it now runs on Gemini 3.6 Flash. In a task, the model menu lets you choose the Gemini model and thinking level.

The Help Center splits the work into three parts:

  • Task: the goal, for example "plan and manage my business trip to London".
  • Schedule: when it runs, at a set time or after an event, such as "when my flight is delayed, notify me and propose a new itinerary".
  • Skill: reusable instructions that tell Gemini how to do a job and which tools to use. Gemini can also pick a relevant skill on its own.

You can start by typing "set up", "get started" or "interview me" in a task, and Gemini walks you through your first skills and tasks.

Spark uses Connected Apps and Google services: Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Keep, Tasks, Contacts, Photos, YouTube, and Search services such as Flights, Hotels and Maps. Google added MCP connections to Canva, OpenTable and Instacart at launch, and custom apps can be connected in some Gemini apps.

How Gemini Spark works

  • Cloud runtime. Spark runs in Google's cloud, so scheduled work does not need your device to stay on.
  • Two browsers. On desktop, Gemini can drive your local Chrome, with access to the sites you are signed in to. That needs your device and Chrome to stay awake. The remote browser keeps working when your device is closed, and pauses for you to take over at steps such as signing in.
  • Remote computer. For code or complex jobs, Gemini uses a remote computer and saves its data for later sessions. You can delete remote browser and computer data in Task settings.
  • Files. Gemini can create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs, code, images and archives, and it shows the files it read or changed in the task's work panel.
  • Concurrency. Up to 15 tasks can run at once. A schedule does not run while 15 tasks are already running.
  • Mac app. In the Gemini app on Mac, tasks can work with local files, and you can ask Gemini to act on your Mac from another device.

Approvals and risks

Gemini asks for review before it sends communications, modifies your data, makes purchases, submits web forms or signs in with Google. Edits to shared Docs, Sheets and Slides need your confirmation. For passwords and payment details, it asks you to take control of the browser and type them yourself. Bulk changes to private items in Google Tasks are the exception: Gemini can make them without confirmation.

The Help Center also lists the risks. Content on a website, email or document can carry hidden instructions that try to make the agent leak data or run harmful code. Gemini may share your name, contact details, files or preferences with the sites it uses. And if a schedule runs while you are offline, you may not be able to stop an unintended action. Google advises against scheduling tasks you consider sensitive and suggests clearing remote browser data after sensitive sessions.

Spark started in May as a beta for US AI Ultra subscribers. In July Google extended it to Ultra subscribers in every Gemini app language and supported country outside the excluded regions, and opened it to AI Pro subscribers in the US. In October it began reaching AI Pro subscribers in India.

Requirements from the Help Center: you must be 18 or over, use a personal Google Account (not work or school), subscribe to AI Pro or Ultra, keep Keep Activity on and opt in to Personal Intelligence. Tasks are available in the Gemini mobile app, the Mac app and gemini.google.com.

Spark draws on the Gemini app's compute-based usage limits. Google says these depend on prompt complexity, features and chat length, refresh every five hours until you reach a weekly cap, and can be extended with AI credits. How much a task uses depends on how many you run and how complex they are, and Gemini tells you when you are close to the limit.

Limits to know

  • Not available in the EEA, Nigeria, Switzerland or the UK.
  • Personal Google Accounts only for now.
  • A schedule that runs while you are away may complete an action before you can stop it.
  • The Spark name is being phased out in favor of Task, and some Help Center pages still use the old name.
  • Reviews differ on details. PCMag called it the best AI agent it had tested in June. A TechCrunch reviewer found it useful for shopping research but reported a promo code that did not work.
